“I had to go to Jackson Mississippi to conduct the Jackson All-City Concert Band. And I’m always recruiting for Virginia State so I ran across this tuba player who was the first chair player in the Mississippi All-State Band. And to sit 1st chair on that band, I knew he had to be awesome… So I began to talk to him about coming to VSU and being in our tuba section and before I could finish he said, You talking about horse power?! They are at the top of my list!. He knew more about them than I did… And that’s when I realized they had gotten so popular. I am so proud of them and very pleased with everything they have accomplished.” – Prof. Harold Haughton Sr., Former Dir. Of Bands – Virginia State University 1984-2002
